What are the benefits of calculator use?

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics claim that studies based on calculator use provides evidence that calculators enhance:

  • student achievement

  • learning concepts

  • orientation towards mathematics

  • learning behaviors in mathematics

What are the pros and cons of using calculators for math instruction?

     Pros:

  • Technology Knowledge -- because our society is based around technology, knowing how to use another piece of this environment is important

  • Enjoyment -- calculators can make math more enjoyable

  • Accuracy -- calculators are fast and accurate and give quick answers that can be double-checked easily

     Cons:

  • Complacency -- students often rely on calculators to compute all of their math problems

  • Cheating -- graphing calculators allow students to store notes or formulas that could allow them to cheat during testing

  • Cost -- a simple calculator is relatively inexpensive, while a graphing calculator can be around $100 -- also, calculators need batteries to work which is an added reoccurring cost
